The latest report showed that the largest cacti, Saguaros, dealt with the scorching heat in Arizona and Phoenix.
Cacti are supposed to live under extreme temperatures, but the Saguaros in the United States could die from intense heat.
Recently, Nature World News (NWN) reported that hotter temperatures continued to emerge in parts of the U.S., as experts noted the possible heat-related health risks.
The NWS Weather Prediction Center reported that at least 120 million people are under the threat of dangerous heat next week. The advisory explained that the Northeast and parts of the Midwest could expect extreme temperatures.
Record-breaking heat unfolded in the country, Axios reported that heatwaves reached shattering records in Phoenix.
- The report noted that 110° was recorded in the region, becoming more challenging due to lack of rainfall.
Furthermore, the Associated Press (AP) report showed that many residents in Phoenix struggled with the record-high temperatures, especially the homeless.
- Homeless people could likely suffer more from the impact of the hot weather as they don't have access to AC or cooler environments.
Cacti and extreme heat
Cactus is supposed to thrive under extreme temperatures. However, the scorching heat in the U.S. could affect even the cactus.
According to CNN and Reuters recent reports, the lack of rainfall and intense heat caused the large cactus to suffer from heat stress.
The Arizona - Sonora Desert Museum explained that the saguaro cactus is also known as Carnegiea gigantea, which bodies are also covered by spines. They can also live from 150 to 200 years.
- The report said that the cactus can also be seen in parts of Southern Arizona and Mexico.
- Saguaro cactus can grow from 40 to 60 feet tall. For them to thrive, it needs the right water and temperature.
In the CNN report, Chief Science Officer Kimberlie McCue explained that the said cacti showed highly stressed conditions around the Desert Botanical Garden.
The report noted that the saguaro cactuses suffered from heat, causing them to rot inside. The rising temperatures could cause the cacti to die.
McCue added that while the said cactus can live in heat and arid areas, they could reach their limits.
Based on Reuters, research scientist, Tania Hernandez, explained that the heat should cool down to help the cactus, allowing water to come.
Extreme temperatures can make it more challenging for plants and animals to thrive as global heating continues to rise.
