Fetch is a good dog workout, and it also works on smaller breeds.

There is a recent prediction that half of the American population will be obese by the end of the current decade. The situation is not better among pet dogs. In fact, experts claimed that at least half of them are suffering from weight issues.

Exceeding your desirable body fat percentage was, is, and will never be good, even to pets. Did you know that even dogs can suffer from cardiac arrest, diabetes, and arthritis?

There are many factors that lead to obesity. However, these two are the most common cause: overfeeding and lack of exercise. The former can be easily remedied. Owners just need to control the amount their pets could eat.

The lack of exercise, however, is a bit more complicated. Aside from the many factors that make a dog lazy, the amount and type of physical workouts vary depending on the species of the dogs. For instance, short-nosed breeds are not suited for a strenuous workout because they have breathing problems.

Before you force them to shed those extra pounds off, you should consult your trusted veterinarian for some advice on how to work them out.

But for reference, here are some workout ideas that can work on many species.

1. Swimming

Swimming is a low impact exercise that is perfect especially for dogs with arthritis. Of course, summer is the best time since even they are annoyed with the heat.

But before you allow them to go to the water, make sure they are wearing a flotation device. Some species like bulldogs will sink down. Make sure you accompany them all the time for their safety.

2. Walking

This old exercise always works, even to smaller dogs. Plan the best route where they will not be distracted or be agitated, and put them on a leash before going out. Make sure to bring water for your pet, so they can re-hydrate.

Be mindful, however, that some dogs are not suited for long walks. These are mostly the smaller breeds and short-nosed dogs. Puppies should not be allowed too since some of their bones are still growing.

3. Play catch

This exercise doesn't just burn sweat but also improves the dog-human bond. It is also a form of behavioral training, specifically for the "come-when-called" and "drop-it" command.

Surprisingly, this exercise also works on smaller breeds. You just need to make sure that you are giving them a smaller and lighter toy so that it will not hurt their jaws and back. Throw it slowly, so they will not have to jump high.

4. Let them play with other dogs

Too lazy to work them out? Visit a dog park instead and allow them to socialize with other dogs. According to experts, depriving your pets of socializing with other dogs will make them fearful -- and it is unhealthy. The study says that it will cause hypertension, kidney, and intestinal problems, dysfunctional immune system, and muscle breakdown.

Fearful dogs are also aggressive, and it will be difficult to bring them to a different environment like a vet clinic.

5. Indoor workouts

Are you living in an area that barely has any place for running? Or the weather is bad? Try an indoor workout instead. Move your furniture and set up obstacle courses. You can use a hula hoop where he can jump through.

You can also train your dog's senses and navigation instinct by creating a tunnel made from cushions, making him hunt for treats, or simply by playing hide-and-seek with him.

A treadmill also works.
