Dogs
Loud noise does not just hurt their ears but might also cause confusion, then cause an accident. Burst

Last November, an 18-month old puppy died from cardiac arrest after it became terrified from the loud explosion caused by fireworks display. The story went viral on Facebook and has gathered at least 75,000 shares.

Every festivity that has fireworks display would be an animal's worst days, especially dogs. After all, their ears are at least four times more sensitive than an average human's. Aside from the distress the sound brings, it may also cause accidents, such as being hit by a car while fleeing on the main road.

While multiple petitions have been raised to control fireworks, unfortunately, it will not be halted for your fur baby's sake yet. And the only thing that you can do for now is to help them calm down during a show.

Here is what you can do:

1. Train them to be accustomed to the sound of fireworks

You can start first by making them listen to firework sounds available on Youtube. You start first with the faintest possible option before gradually increasing the volume. You can play with your pup to distract them, and give them a treat so that they will think the sound is associated with playing.

2. Provide a safe space

If the training does not work yet, you probably need to invest in a place where they will feel comfortable. Just like humans, dogs also need a safe space where they could stay to ease their anxiety.

If your money will allow it, buy a dog crate and put some cozy blankets and their favorite toys on it.

You may also check which area of your house that have less house, like your basement. Just like on the crate, put some bed and toys so they will feel more comfortable.

3. Workout your pet hours before the fireworks show

Just like on humans, the level of endorphins (or the happy hormones) increases when a dog workouts. So earlier in the day, tire them out. Take them to a long walk. Play catch a ball in the lawn. This way, they can be less anxious during the evening.

However, do not overwork them. Remember to rehydrate them too.

4. Try anxiety wrap

If you ever have a baby, you probably notice that they tend to be calmer when they were wrapped in a towel. This technique is called "swaddling", and when done correctly, it is effective.

A similar technique can be applied to dogs. By putting a maintained pressure on specific spots, they will feel calmer. You can check the video below for a tutorial on how to do this.

However, do not leave them unattended while wearing a band. Accidents may happen. Also, some dogs might not feel comfortable when they first wear it, so remember to practice it during a non-stressed day.

If you have no time for that, you can purchase the miraculous Thundershirt which provides the same function.

5. Consider medication

There are some over-the-counter anti-anxiety medications such as Zesty Paws Calming Chews, which contains L-Theanine that can relax your fur baby. However, it is probably the best to visit your veterinarian, so that they could advise you on how to properly administer the medication.

6. Evacuate

If nothing really works, consider moving out from the area. Instead, you can go to higher places where you can still see the fireworks while being away from the loud noise.
