A new report published on June 3 suggested that bald eagles be removed from the endangered species list in New Jersey. This proposal stemmed from the significant recovery of the bald eagle population in the region.

The remarkable rebound in their numbers can be attributed to conservation efforts to protect their population, including guarding nests and hatchlings. Education and fostering programs also played a crucial role in raising awareness about these birds.

Last year, the report highlighted that 267 nesting pairs of bald eagles were recorded in parts of New Jersey, showing a significant increase since the early 1980s.

In addition to bald eagles, the report highlights a proposal to remove osprey from the endangered list. The increased numbers and considerable recovery explained that these species are no longer threatened.

In 2007, the bald eagle was delisted from the federal endangered list. However, New Jersey decided to retain the species on the state list, citing concerns about potential impacts on their nesting.

The endangerment of ospreys and bald eagles was blamed for the widespread use of the insecticide DDT and habitat degradation.
