According to a recent report, insects are crucial for ecosystems or the environment. Their existence is considered bio-indicators, indicating the potential threats to wildlife habitats. While some insects are known as agricultural pests, others are crucial for pollination and seed dispersal.

Here are eight unique and largest insects in the wild.

1. Titan Beetle

According to a report, the Titan Beetle (Titanus giganteus), located in South America, is known for its significant size. The species, mostly found in tropical rainforests, can measure as high as 6.5 inches and is known as the largest beetle.

Despite its size, Titan beetles are threatened by habitat loss.

2. Atlas Moth

The Atlas moth (Attacus atlas) is one of the largest moths and is usually found in Asia. Its maximum wingspan is 10 inches. This insect is recognized by its unique markings in the upper corner of its wings.

Reports reveal that Atlas month has been threatened by climate change and widespread habitat loss.

3. Hercules Beetle

The Hercules Beetle (Dynastes hercules) is found in rainforest areas in South America and the Caribbean islands. It is one of the largest flying insects and can grow up to almost 7 inches.

Hercules Beetle showcases two unique horns and fights one another to attract a partner. Whoever wins the battle will become the partner of the female.

4. Goliath Beetle

Africa is home to Goliath Beetles ( Goliathus cacicus), which measure 3 to 4.5 inches long. Due to its amazing size, this beetle can live in challenging environments due to its hardened exoskeleton. Reports show that there are six species of Goliath Beetles.

5. Large Weta

The large Weta (Deinacrida) is found in New Zealand and can be larger than a mouse or sparrow. Reports show that females can lay up to 300 cigar-shaped eggs, and this insect likes to feed on native plants and leaves.

6. Queen Alexandra's Birdwing

Next on the list is Queen Alexandra's Birdwing (Ornithoptera alexandrae) from the Northern Province of Papua New Guinea. It is considered one of the most beautiful butterflies due to its colors and wingspan of up to 30cm. Additionally, the females are bigger than the males.

6. White Witch Moth

Last on the list is the White Witch Moth (Thysania Agrippina), native to South and Central America. Its wingspan can reach up to 12 inches and is recognized as one of the largest insects. Other names associated with this species are great owlet moth and ghost moth.

Its enormous wings make it unique. While the records indicate its present status, the said insect is vulnerable to habitat loss and climate change effects.

Despite their unique sizes and diverse role in ecosystems, these large insects are threatened by habitat loss, deforestation, climate change, and rising temperatures.
