Winter Storm Bringing Heavy Snow Risk to Move from Mid-Mississippi Valley to US Northeast by Tuesday [NWS]

A winter storm bringing packs of heavy snow will move from the mid-Mississippi Valley to the Northeast of the United States this week. According to the National Weather Service (NWS), the storm will transition into a strong Nor'easter by Tuesday, February 13, affecting the Mid-Atlantic and New England regions.

In the coming hours, residents of the affected regions may experience cold temperatures and blizzard conditions.

The latest US weather forecast comes a week after the NWS issued an initial forecast of a winter storm barrelling through the northern Plains and will further move in an eastward direction this week. Since the North American winter season started in December 2023, the northern tier of the US has experienced recurring winter storms and blizzard conditions. Meteorologists attributed this intense weather to an Arctic blast.

In its new US winter storm forecast, the NWS' Weather Prediction Center (WPC) stated a significant winter storm connected with a strong upper-level trough and low-pressure system will cross through the Ohio Valley on Monday evening, February 12. The storm will then interact with cold air to produce some areas of localized heavy snowfall across parts of the region, affecting also Tennessee with light accumulations of snowfall.

The storm system will arrive across the Mid-Atlantic states on Monday evening and it will transform into a Nor'easter on Tuesday morning. The forecast shows that impact areas could range from New England down to Pennsylvania and New Jersey, with possible snowfall accumulations between 6 to 12 inches.

The weather service issued the forecast at 3:00 p.m. EST (local time) on Monday and it will be valid until Thursday, February 15.

In addition to the winter storm forecast, the US weather agency also mentioned the risk of severe thunderstorms with heavy rain and flash flooding threats across parts of the US Southeast. Meanwhile, there is a brewing storm system across the Pacific Northwest that will arrive in the region by the middle of the week or at least from Wednesday, February 14, bringing areas of localized torrential rain and mountain snow.

Winter Storm Kayden

The winter weather system lingering over the Northeast is the same system from last week, named by meteorologists as "Winter Storm Kayden," which will also impact the province of Nova Scotia, Canada. Long-term forecasts show that the temporary warm weather across Canada and the US will end, since a weather pattern will develop across North America by the mid-February and month-end.

This means that Winter Storm Kayden is expected to pour down heavy snow and cause blizzard conditions around Valentine's Day.

Thick snow will also blanket areas from Pennsylvania to New York City, Boston, and across Nova Scotia. The winter system will impact tens of millions of people due to the threat of blizzards and impassable roads, according to Severe Weather Europe website.
