Nature World News (NWN) has covered some of the most disastrous weather events in 2023, causing devastating damage to life and property. Parts of the world experienced widespread flooding, heavy rains, tornados, severe thunderstorms and freezing conditions.

2023 recorded challenging weather events that caused evacuations and emergency concerns, especially for flood-prone cities and communities. Efficient weather forecasting is essential to predict the weather and prevent devastating aftermath.

Weather agencies emphasized that people should stay updated with the weather to evacuate quickly and avoid being stranded in widespread flooding. Here are some of the most disastrous weather events that NWN has covered this year.

Southeast Alaska Landslide

In Southeast Alaska, the heavy rains triggered landslides in a highway, leaving about three casualties on November 23. Cleaning and recovery were deployed to help clear the road and affected residents. Authorities worked around the clock to look for the missing people.

The Deadly Tornado and Severe Weather in China

On September 21, NWN reported that Eastern China experienced severe weather conditions and deadly tornadoes. Infrastructures and buildings in Suqian and Jiangsu provinces experienced devastating tornadoes.

According to recent reports, about 10 people were killed. 137 houses were damaged, while 5,500 people were affected. China has suffered from extreme weather events, including drought, wildfires, storms and poor air quality.

Deadly Cyclone in South Brazil

South Brazil was battered by a powerful cyclone on September 9. It brought flooding rainfall in the region, especially in Santiago, Passo Fundo, and Cambara Do Sul. About 3000 homes were damaged, while 46 were reported missing.

In addition, 223 people were injured from the cyclone and 147,000 residents were heavily affected. When the cyclone unloaded, 11,000 people were immediately evacuated from their homes.

Severe Flooding in Southwestern Japan

On July 11, Southwestern Japan suffered from widespread rain and flooding, causing evacuations and rescue operations. The rounds of heavy rain caused rivers to rapidly rise. About six casualties were reported.

Major Flooding in Peru

On March 18, Peru experienced heavy rains, causing travel disruption and devastating property damage due to Cyclone Yaku. The severe weather also impacted parts of Piura, Lambayeque and Tumbes. The cyclone managed to strengthen, leaving about six casualties.

Winter Storms and Heavy Snow in San Bernardino County in California

Powerful winter storms also impacted parts of the US, especially in the San Bernardino County in California. Heavy snow unloaded in the region, causing power outages and cold-related health concerns. The snow-hit county caused many residents to become stranded.

About 13 counties were also under a state of emergency. About 12 people were also the recorded casualties. The colder conditions became challenging for homeowners after being trapped in heavy snow.
