Rescue operations have been deployed to help affected residents as a powerful cyclone unleashed in South Brazil. At least 46 people are still missing, while 3000 homes are destroyed.

A video of a toddler was rescued in September as a cyclone hit the country. The weather report showed heavy rain hit Santiago, Passo Fundo, and Cambara Do Sul.

The recent flooding rainfall could be blamed on an extratropical cyclone in Brazil.

Residents near the Rio Grande do Sul braced for the impacts of the recent cyclone in Brazil. Reports revealed that over 147,000 residents were affected in the region.

  • Missing number of people reached 46 individuals.
  • 223 individuals were injured.
  • 41 people were reported casualties
  • 11,000 people were immediately evacuated from their houses
  • 3,000 residents lost their houses due to the flooding

Furthermore, over 55 municipalities in South Brazil are also affected. Residents are advised to check the weather and flooding before returning home.

As of Friday (September 8, 2023), rescue operations were present to assist weather-affected residents and to find missing people over the South of Brazil.

Helicopters, eight military aircraft and emergency personnel also helped with the rescue, especially when most roads were flooded.

On June 19's report, parts of the Rio Grande do Sul were hit by a powerful cyclone with 13 casualties.

  • 5,000 houses were damaged.
  • 84,000 people suffered from power outages

Food baskets and medicine kits

In the Rio Grande do Sul, the reconstruction of damaged buildings could likely reach 100 million reais ($20 million).

Meanwhile, Vice President Geraldo Alckmin said the government would immediately help affected residents with the following assistance:

  • 20,000 food baskets
  • 15,000 medicine kits
  • 800 reais ($167) for residents who lost their homes

Climate change could likely the culprit

Experts said that the cyclones in Brazil had become more frequent. Alckmin explained that the events could be a result of climate change.

Nature World News (NWN) reported climate change impacts on extreme weather events. It can rapidly intensify tropical storms, hurricanes, and other extreme weather events.

Researchers explained that the warmer sea surface temperatures could likely help intensify the severe weather events.

As a result, better weather prediction is crucial to prepare for possible stormy conditions. Efficient coordination with local, regional and national forecasting is essential to help communities evacuate.

Furthermore, homeowners should stay updated with the weather forecasts in their areas or communities.

Limiting outdoor activities during the storm is also recommended, as slower commutes and travel disruptions are possible.

As storms become more frequent, keeping emergency kits at home could be helpful during evacuations and widespread power outages.
