Violent storms struck millions of Americans across the East Coast of the United States over the weekend. The severe weather caused widespread disruption and led to a tornado outbreak involving at least five twisters in an area from Colorado to Massachusetts, according to reports. The storms also ended the first heatwave of the season in the U.S., where the summer period started in June.

The stormy weather brought strong winds, downing trees, and knocking power lines that cause thousands of people without electricity. Casualties have been reported as well across the eastern U.S. during the weekend storms. As of Monday morning, July 31, the region saw cooler and drier air, ABC News reported.

The U.S. East Coast weather has been a rollercoaster ride due to the persistence of both scorching temperatures and severe thunderstorms in the past several weeks. These weather conditions have been also the same in other parts of the country, including in the southwestern and central states.

The relentless heatwave that swept the nation, lingered over the Midwest region and the Eastern Seaboard, placing tens of millions of Americans to intense heat and "oppressive humidity," Reuters reported, as cited by Geo News on Saturday.

Widespread Disruption

Some of the most affected areas include Virginia, Washington, D.C., and Maryland, where the severe storms toppled trees and caused power outages for over 200,000 customers, according to ABC News.

In Virginia, a man died on Saturday after a tree crashed over his home as the powerful storms pummeled the region. During a statement on X, the former Twitter social media platform, Prince William County Police Department stated it is investigating the death of the 43-year-old man in relation to the storm-related incident, NBC News reported.

The National Weather Service (NWS) reported five tornadoes from Colorado to Massachusetts on Saturday, as cited by ABC News. One of the twisters, with winds reaching up to 105 miles per hour, touched the ground in Foxborough, Massachusetts, located around 22 miles southwest of Boston. It is still unclear if the tornadoes caused any fatalities.

Storms Replace Heatwave

Massive heatwaves have been persistent not only in the U.S. but also in other parts of the Northern Hemisphere, including Europe and China, as previously covered by Nature World News.

The storms' replacement of the heatwave in the U.S. East Coast is potentially temporary since the U.S. summer season is far from over. In the coming weeks, renewed high temperatures and dry conditions are expected to return in the region.

In recent days, the NWS stated almost 200 million people in the U.S. were under a heat advisory or flood alert since last July 27, as cited by The Associated Press. This comes as the extreme heat reportedly moved into the eastern part of the country, bringing risks of heat-related conditions.
