Earthquake preparedness and safety

While earthquakes could be challenging to detect, communities and homeowners could become more prepared if an earthquake occurs.

Earthquakes can become deadly and dangerous. According to the American Red Cross, earthquakes could lead to devastating damage to homes and infrastructures. Quakes could also result in flash flooding, landslides, tsunamis and downed powerlines.

Stay updated with earthquake news and alerts.

Homeowners should keep updated with possible earthquakes or aftershocks. Preparing multiple sources of information and alerts would become helpful when an earthquake strikes.

Homeowners should also consider checking their areas if they are near earthquake-prone areas or fault lines.

Check your home for improvements.

Homeowners should also check their homes for possible improvements and repairs. Homes should observe the strict building guidelines in their communities.

It is best to secure your home, especially cabinets, fragile materials and toxic or harmful products.

Remember, Drop, Cover and Hold On

Americans should keep in mind the Drop, Cover and Hold On. They should also prepare emergency plans with their children to help them stay calm during disasters, including earthquakes.

As you move to secure places, you must cover your head. Tables and desks are also recommendable to stay underneath.

Prepare emergency supplies

Earthquakes can damage powerlines and significant roads. Roads can become inaccessible, and there could be widespread power outages.

Homeowners can keep emergency supplies and kits that would become helpful when an emergency comes. The recommendable emergency supplies are the following:

  • Battery-powered radio
  • Battery-powered flashlights
  • Medicine supplies or kits
  • Bottled water supply
  • Non-perishable goods
  • Extra mobile phone

When quake stops

After the earthquake, homeowners should inform their families that they are safe. If your family becomes missing, it is best to report it to authorities.

Be careful with damaged trees, powerlines and homes as you evacuate outside.
