By Thursday evening, hail and damaging winds are expected in the south because there is a slight chance of severe weather in north Texas.
Severe Weather: North Texas
A cold front is expected to move in from the west on Wednesday, which could lead to severe weather on Wednesday and Thursday in North Texas. The risk of severe weather is minimal at best because the cap is in place and is likely to hold.
On Wednesday, there is a small chance of rain, mainly to the east. On Thursday, a number of factors could contribute to the lifting of the ban on severe weather. Winds would congregate along the front and intensify storms after 2:00 to 3:30 PM.
The cap, also known as the "Lid," is a layer of fairly warm air aloft that prevents or delays the progression of thunderstorms. It is typically located several thousand feet above the surface of the ground. As air parcels enter this layer, they become colder than the surrounding air, which prevents them from continuing to rise and forming thunderstorms.
As a result, even in the presence of severe instability, the cap frequently stops or delays the development of thunderstorms. However, explosive thunderstorm development may happen if the cap is broken or weakened, according to National Weather Service.
On a scale of 1 to 5, Thursday's severe weather risk is rated as "slight" for much of North Texas, or "2."
Hail, Damaging Winds, Flood: South Texas
In the DFW region and to the east and south, hail and damaging winds pose the greatest risk. Additionally, a lone tornado could occur.
In the evening hours, there will be a risk of flooding in the southern counties if the storms are large enough.
On Friday morning, there may be some persistent rain, mainly to the south and east. On Saturday, there won't be any rain, and Sunday may see a return of the rain. There may be a few showers and thunderclaps on Sunday. There will be a few sporadic showers on Monday, FOX4 reports.
