Autumn in Australia spans from March to May each year and it is characterized by pleasant or calm weather with average temperatures ranging from 12.7 to 22.7 degrees Celsius, according to Australia's First Light Travel website.
The weather and climatic elements of the autumn season in the country is similar to other regions but differs in the time of occurrence compared to the Northern Hemisphere.
Conventional meteorological forecasts show there is relatively little rainfall during autumn.
However, this is not always the case.
In the earlier phase of the 2022 Australian autumn season, the nation's east coast endured recurring widespread flooding due to intense, heavy rain and driven by the La Nina weather pattern.
The weather systems are continuation of the torrential rain from February 2022.
Earlier in March of this year, the Bureau of Meteorology (BoM) issued its autumn season long-range forecast, indicating that most parts of Australia in the coming months will be drier and warmer than normal.
The autumn temperatures will be hotter during daytime hours for most of the country, as well as during nighttime hours in coastal areas in the mainland and even in the island state of Tasmania.
BoM Autumn Forecast
BoM Technical Lead for extended prediction, Dr. Andrew Watkins, stated drier than average conditions have combined in some areas during Australia's summer season, including in parts of southern Queensland, western Tasmania, and the southwest part of Western Australia state.
Watkins explained the country's climate drivers are easing and expected to be neutral in the coming months.
Furthermore, the BoM meteorologist clarified that when these drivers are leaning to neutrality, autumn rainfall in southern Australia has been lower-than-average over the past several decades.
The Australian weather authority also mentioned fire agencies identified most parts of Australia has normal bushfire potential during the season.
However, areas at risk include some parts of New South Wales, Queensland, and Western Australia.
Australian Autumn Season
Most days during the Australian autumn season will be warm and sunny.
However, the period could also lead to rain in many parts of the country; wherein the north is still likely to be wet, while the south will experience varying weather conditions, according to website Tourism Australia.
In particular, autumn brings cooler days with occasional rain in south Australia.
Compared to its northern counterpart, Darwin and its surrounding regions could still be hit by tropical storms, the tourism site adds.
In contrast to the recent BoM autumn forecast, the same Australian weather agency during the same period in 2022 issued a wet autumn outlook for parts of eastern Australia with above-average rainfall, according to Australia's ABC News.
The relative forecasts provided by the BoM between March 2022 and March of this year could indicate that while temperatures are expected to be generally warm and dry, the occurrence of heavy rain and flooding is still possible nationwide, especially in the east coast.
