According to the latest reports, the population of Red Goshawks in Australia showed a significant decline that needs urgent conservation and protection efforts.
Researchers raised concerns over Australia's possible extinction of the Red Goshawk population.
The research title is Rapid and recent range collapse of Australia's Red Goshawk. The findings were published in the Emu-Austral Ornithology.
Red Goshawk
Ph.D. candidate Chris MacColl conducted the study that revealed the current status of Australia's rare bird. MacColl is from The University of Queensland's School of Earth and Environmental Sciences.
According to eBird, Red Goshawk has the scientific name of Erythrotriorchis radiatus, and thrives in tropical forests in Australia.
- Red Goshawk is a known red raptor that could attack its prey.
- According to Australian Wildlife, the national conservation status is vulnerable, and the species is critically endangered in parts of Australia.
Furthermore, Australia wildlife explained that red goshawk suffered from threats:
- Threats of wildfires
- Habitat loss impact on nesting trees
Declining population
Meanwhile, the researchers explained that they complied data set of about 1,679 occurrences and trends of the Red Goshawks between 1978 and 2020.
The report is also published on the Phys.org website. Habitat loss and habitat change might have contributed to the decline.
After studying, the researchers found the following. The researchers estimated that about 34% of the breeding range was impacted (In the last four decades).
- Red Goshawk showed extinct in parts of Queensland and New South Wales (NSW). NSW had a rapid decline and loss of Red Goshawk.
- In Queensland, the report added that Cape York is considered a place where they could be a chance of breeding for the said species.
- The report added that the Red Goshawk could be found in parts of Northern Australia, Cape York, Tiwi Island and Sydney.
- Meanwhile, North Queensland revealed a decline in the Red Goshawk population.
- Kimberly, Top End and Tiwi Islands are crucial areas for conservation efforts.
- The researchers noted that the bird significantly declined in eastern Australia
The researchers analyzed the sightings and possible status of the Red Goshawk population.
Furthermore, the researchers showed the significance of making the Red Goshawk's Australian conservation status Endangered due to the rapid population decline.
Ultimately, the researchers emphasized the role of conservation and protection efforts to save the decline of the bird species.
- Tracking or monitoring the bird's movement is essential.
- Areas with rare birds should be protected and monitored for improvement.
However, the researchers recognized the need for more studies to determine the cause of the Red Goshawk population decline.
According to the Phys.org report, there is a need for coordination with communications and government agencies to develop policies protecting the Red Goshawk population.
Indeed, the alarming scale of decline is a pressing concern in Australia. Targeted surveying of the bird is also helpful.
