According to the weather forecast today, some schools in Nevada will be closed because of the dangerous driving conditions that winter weather brings.
Nevada Schools Canceled Today
Classes in the area are experiencing delays and cancellations once more due to the winter weather. The Washoe County School District has announced that all classes and on-campus activities will be canceled for Thursday for valley schools. However, distance learning will still be an option for Incline Village students.
Mater Academy, The Lion and Lamb Christian School, and St. John's Children's Center are all announcing that classes have been canceled for the day, in addition to Washoe County schools. The Just Kidding Learning Center located in Spanish Springs is also postponing classes due to today's school closings.
Pinecrest Academy in Northern Nevada will be open but with a delay of up to two hours. Buses won't be available to transport children to school because Washoe County has closed its schools.
All of the district's schools will be in session two hours later than usual, according to Storey County.
The delay for Thursday's in-person classes has been announced by Truckee Meadows Community College. Due to anticipated hazardous driving conditions, the start time for all physical locations, along with the Child Care Center, has been delayed to 10:00 AM. Prior to that time, no in-person classes will be held; however, online learning will go ahead as planned.
The start of classes at the University of Nevada, Reno, will also be delayed until Thursday at 10:00 AM. Wintermester classes will go on as planned, but all unnecessary operations have been suspended at the University of Nevada, Lake Tahoe, Kolo8 NewsNow reports.
Special Weather Statement: Winter Weather Advisory
In western Nevada, it will continue to snow lightly until this morning's sunrise. Expect slippery and snowy driving conditions this morning. The western Nevadan roads are covered in snow, and many of the roads have chain controls, according to NDOT webcams.
In Sierra Nevada, this morning's snowfall is still light to moderate. The roads in northeast California as well as the Sierra are covered in snow, according to webcams. Be prepared for slick roads and chain controls. Through the afternoon, there will be snow showers, especially in areas south of Highway 50.
Finally, snow is making its way into Mono County, where a total snowfall of 2 to 4 inches is forecast west of US-395 and 4 to 8 inches in the Sierra crest. The snow has a dry, powdery texture and a high snow-to-liquid ratio.
Strong southwest wind gusts of up to 90 mph are anticipated along the Sierra ridgelines, affecting aviation and backcountry recreation. Later today and into tonight, strong easterly winds will turn along the Sierra crest behind the front. This morning's traffic is expected to be slow and there may be icy patches. Experts warn that traveling through the Sierra Nevada mountains can be challenging, The Weather Channel reports.
Other Weather Alerts
According to National Weather Service, aside from the Winter Weather Advisory, two other weather alerts are in effect over some parts of Nevada.
A Wind Advisory will be in effect until January 20 at 10 AM in Esmeralda and Central Nye County, as well as in Western Clark and Southern Nye County.
A Lake Wind Advisory is in effect from the 18th to the 19th until 7 PM in Western Nevada Basin and Range including Pyramid Lake.
