Several weather advisories are in effect for counties in New Jersey. According to weather experts, Thursday night is expected to have extremely slippery roads.
In advance of a coastal storm that is anticipated to hit New Jersey on Thursday and Friday, with light snow, strong winds, sleet, freezing rain, slick roads, and minor flooding, the first two winter weather advisories have been issued.
The weather service has issued a winter weather advisory for Sussex and Warren that is in effect from noon on Thursday until midnight on Friday. This advisory calls for mixed precipitation, which include up to 2 inches of snow accumulations and a thin layer of ice.
Slippery Roads
Before the precipitation changes to rain, there may be several hours of snow, sleet, and freezing rain, which could make for a hazardous Thursday evening commute.
Before the system wanes out Friday afternoon, the majority of the state will eventually receive 1 to 2 inches of rain, according to the National Weather Service. Both Delaware Bay and the Jersey Shore are anticipated to experience minor coastal flooding.
Thursday Weather
The Thursday morning commute will be challenging due to a light coating of ice in some places along the Interstate 95 corridor.
Inland wind gusts of up to 30 mph and coastal winds of 20 to 30 mph with gusts of up to 45 mph are both possible on Thursday night.
As the winter weather advisory goes into effect at 5 AM and lasts until noon, the storm's worst effects will be felt in Camden, Gloucester, Salem, and northwest Burlington counties earlier on Thursday. A fraction of an inch of ice accumulation is predicted along with up to an inch of snow mixed with sleet, freezing rain, and other precipitation types.
Throughout the storm, rain will only fall in shoreline areas.
By early afternoon, the precipitation in those counties will change to rain, moving from south to north. The strongest winds and possibly heavy rain are predicted for Thursday night, according to the weather service's discussion of its forecast on Wednesday morning.
