Cold Front Alert: Renewed ‘Unsettled Weather’ for Eastern Australia Expected This Week

A cold front is causing a combination of severe storms and wet weather in some parts of Australia, as forecasted to be the weather conditions this week by Australian weather authorities. Weather warnings have been in place for affected areas as multiple weather hazards like heavy rain, large hail, strong winds, and heavy snow are possible for Queensland, New South Wales, Victoria, and Tasmania.

The east coast of Australia will experience a renewed "unsettled weather" with storm and rain shower expected across multiple states this week, according to Australia's 9 News. The mixture of weather is due to a cold front passing through the country's southeast region, where temperatures are expected to drop. In addition, a number of weather warnings are in effect for New South Wales.

Initial forecasts by Australian meteorologists said damaging winds were expected across central-southern New South Wales from Monday morning, December 11. As December kicked in, Melbourne is on track to return to its winter-like conditions with snow forecast falling in the alpine regions earlier this week. Warm and windy weather has been felt in Victoria on Monday with the state reaching 27 degrees Celsius.

By Wednesday, December 14, Melbourne could need their jackets again as torrential rain and potential hail will fall across the state, where temperatures could drop to 15 degrees Celsius. Related weather conditions are also anticipated for New South Wales. Many areas will experience a mixture of weather, including warm and stormy conditions.

The forecast is according to the Bureau of Meteorology (BoM), as cited by the Australian national news service, which said that it will feel more like winter weather again in South Australia. Furthermore, showers, storms, and Alpine snow in Southeast Australia will face maximum temperatures between 6 to 16 degrees Celsius below average.

Australian Government's Bureau of Meteorology Weather Forecast

In its media release on Monday, the BoM said cold fronts and low-pressure system are persisting to bring wintery conditions to most parts of Southeast Australia this week. During the said period, heavy rain, severe storms, strong and gusty winds, and below average temperatures are expected for this time of the year.

The Australian meteorological agency said the occurrence of severe thunderstorms with large hail, damaging winds, and heavy rainfall may lead to flash flooding, especially in New South Wales and Queensland.

Severe thunderstorm warnings are also in effect across parts of New South Wales due to damaging winds, while a severe weather warning is also in place for parts of eastern New South Wales.

Until Wednesday, December 14, snowfall is possible in the states of Victoria, New South Wales, and Tasmania. Maximum temperatures will be between 6 to 12 degrees below average for most south-east-southern Australia this week. Hobart and Melbourne can also experience record-breaking low maximum temperatures this week.

While weather experts previously predicted a warmer weather for Australia this year, the final weather outlook is yet to be made.

According to meteorologist Ben Domensino from Weatherzone, Victoria should get out of the cool weather by early next week as it is still too early to predict in an absolute manner what weather Victoria and the rest of Australia will have for Christmas Day, as cited by The Guardian.
