Two storms are traveling from the Midwest to the mid-Atlantic Ocean into early next week and one of these storms could bring New York City and the Coastal Northeast their first snow of the winter season since December started. The looming storm could cause air travel disruption across the region and affect residents, particularly those living in coastal areas in the East Coast.
Snow Storm System
According to the FOX Forecast Center, a fast-moving system could bring the season's first snowfall to some Northeast cities from Sunday to Monday, December 11 to December 12. In the forecast, most of the Interstate 95 (I-95) corridor has yet to receive significant snowfall this season. However, the upcoming snow will remain confined to the interior Northeast but is also possible in other larger cities.
Fox Weather meteorologists said the system will sweep across the region by the end of the week and towards early next week, a time when snowflakes could fly as far south like the New York City tri-state area for the first time this season.
FOX Weather Meteorologist Michael Estime said that they are keeping their fingers crossed that they are picking up several inches in the metro areas of the Big Apple, but ti is going to be toward the Finger Lakes of New York City, Syracuse, Buffalo, and Albany where we will see possible snowfall events.
Affected Areas
A few inches of snow accumulation are possible during the said period across the interior Northeast, including most of the states of New York and northern Pennsylvania, as well as the western New England region, the US news channel said. Light snowfall accumulation is also possible as far south as northern New Jersey, but areas closer to I-95 will likely to have more rain than snow.
Furthermore, these events may occur if cold air is available and enough to change the rain into a period of snow. If it does occur, New York; Bridgeport, Connecticut; or Province, Rhode Island, would receive their first snowfall of the winter season.
The looming winter snow could also disrupt the flights at three major airports across the region, including the LaGuardia Airport, John F. Kennedy (JFK) International Airport, and Newark Liberty International Airport. Flight cancellations or delays are possible in the coming days due to the snowy weather.
Extreme Weather Pattern
In addition to the lurking storm-driven snow, AccuWeather meteorologists also issued a forecast of an extreme weather pattern that will affect a large portion of the country next week, where a severe weather outbreak will impact the Gulf Coast to the mid-South. In addition, the pattern may also cause blizzard conditions in the northern Plains and flood threat in the mid-South.
Still, AccuWeather also forecast that the minor storm system will bring the first seasonal snow for New York City and the coastal Northeast this weekend. The other storm could also bring snow accumulation totals of up to a foot or so in parts of Iowa, Minnesota, and Wisconsin.
