Energy blackouts could result into potential chaos across the United Kingdom during the upcoming winter season in December. As a result, UK authorities have been preparing for measures, including a script, that would allow the public stay informed and calm should a massive power outage transpires nationwide.

The broadcasting network BBC has been preparing scripts in the event of the massive energy blackouts or "major loss of power" as brutal winter season is expected this year across the UK. This is according to The Guardian, which reported that it has seen the leaked scripts of the UK broadcasting company and how it would reassure the public in case such chaos or widespread disruption occur.

The British daily newspaper adds that the so-called "secret scripts" will be read on air if energy shortages being experienced now due to various factors that would cause blackouts or the loss of gas supplies during the upcoming winter weather. The newspaper also highlights that BBC's role will be more on the side of calming the public, in addition to providing information of the looming infrastructural threat.

The scripts address the fact that major blackouts can disrupt internet access, banking systems, mobile phone networks, and even traffic lights across England, Scotland, and Wales. Meanwhile, the UK's Northern Ireland will not be affected since it shares it electricity grid with the Republic of Ireland, which is not part of the UK.

Potential Public Advisory

Furthermore, The Guardian says the public would be advised to use car radios or receivers powered by battery when listening to emergency broadcasts on FM and long-wave frequencies normally reserved for Radio 2 and Radio 4. One draft of the BBC script reportedly says that the blackout could last for up to 48 hours or two days, making hospital and police authorities under "extreme pressure."

In addition, the UK media agency will also emphasize that the British government will be hoping for power restoration in the next 36 to 48 hours, wherein different parts of Britain will experience intermittent supplies before then.

The scripts were reportedly writer by BBC journalists as part of their routine emergency planning when it comes to preparing statements during hypothetical scenarios, which in this case, a major power outage that could affects millions of Britons.

Energy Blackouts

The UK's National Grid Chief John Pettigrew stated blackouts would need to be implemented during the coldest or deepest evenings for the months of January and February. In particular, this measure will be imposed during the event when electricity generators have not enough gas to meet the electricity or power demand. This is especially the case in a period of cold weather, as cited by Sky News.

Pettigrew's announcement was made during the Financial Times' Energy Transition Summit on Monday, October 17.

Earlier in October, the National Grid issued a "country on notice" advisory that the risk of winter gas shortages has increased and that planned three-hour power blackouts can possibly be conducted in some areas.

In addition to cold weather, the war in Ukraine, which started since Russia invaded into the Eastern European nation in late February, led to a cascade of global economic crises, including the rise of oil and gas prices and resulted in a growing energy uncertainty, according to Camden Media.
