The internet was in stitches this week thanks to some gardeners who have simply had enough of having their crops taken without their consent. They left a note that was cursed at the thief who stole their onions and fled.

According to a recent study, 67% of American households garden, with 55 percent of those saying they are currently growing or intend to grow edible plants.

Sales of "grow your own" produce are rising, and more people are seeking online gardening advice as a result of the growing interest in this type of food.

Social Media Following

On August 12, a photo of a sign at a neighborhood community garden was posted on Reddit. Since then, the image has gained over 53,000 upvotes and been reposted on Facebook and Twitter.

The sign continued by addressing the thief, saying that they should be ashamed for stealing their lovely onions and wishing them to have their underarms infested with a thousand camel fleas.

The sign was first posted on the internet by Kylie from British Columbia, Canada. Her father, who rents a plot at their neighborhood community garden, had sent it to her.

Kylie stated that they are not personally acquainted with the poster. She thought the sign was hilarious and that it looked like something you'd see online when she first saw it.

Common Occurrence

According to Kylie, there have been many problems with people stealing from their garden, especially at this time of year. There are signs everywhere asking people to only pick what they have planted in their little individual plots because it is a pay-per-plot garden. It takes a lot of work to maintain and grow a garden, so Kylie says she can appreciate how upset that person was when their onions were taken.

However, the sign succeeded in making internet users smile when it went viral. The responses poured in over hundreds of comments.

One Reddit user quipped that it brings tears to his eyes, while another stated anybody who disrespects onions should be prosecuted.

Another person mentioned that they frequently have items taken from their garden, and another person replied with a Spoiler Alert that it was the raccoons.

While some individuals questioned whether the thief might have needed food or even suggested that it might have been an animal rather than a human, Kylie appeared uncertain.

According to Kylie, it's highly unlikely that the person who stole food, particularly onions, was in need because of the community they were in, so she believes the anger is justified. However, Kylie thought the curse was pretty bizarre and undoubtedly a unique way to vent your frustration.

Many other gardeners who were online shared their sympathies in the comments after fully comprehending the frustration.

Kylie was astounded by the viral response and couldn't believe the image had gone so far. The comments, according to Kylie, were all hilarious. Her father, who has addressed garden theft before and supported the sign, was very moved to see everyone's support.

Finally, Kylie clarified that an onion typically takes between 100 and 200 days to mature. This is why the loss could have a significant effect on a committed gardener, Newsweek reports.
