Jigawa, like neighboring districts in the rural zone, experiences floods annually.

On Monday the authorities announced that a number 50 individuals have perished in floodwaters triggered by unusually high rainfall in northern Nigeria's Jigawa region; during the commencement of the rainy period in June.

50 People Dead Due to Flooding

According to Sani Yusuf, executive assistant of Jigawa State's Strategic Organization for Disaster Management, about 50 people have perished and numerous have been relocated in northeastern Nigeria as a result of frequent extreme rainfall, the China Daily reported.

Yusuf claimed that least 237 houses had already been destroyed in the Balangu region exclusively, pushing residents in to the agricultural villages, while eleven provisional shelters have mostly been established for those who have been relocated.

While, Nigeria's Federal Minister of United Nations relief and works, Sadiya Farouq who have previously toured Jigawa States to deliver emergency aid, according to a tweet from the national government told journalists on a video message that the tragedy is very tragic since it has grown recurring, inflicting great harm to institutions, residences, and individuals' livelihoods.

The worst-affected area was Kafin Hausa, with 10 lives lost, 68 hospitalized, and 1,436 refugees, the majority of them were from Balangu hamlet, where 237 buildings were damaged.

According to CNN update, Farouq noted that Nigeria's Leader Muhammadu Buhari has asked the Department of United Nations relief and works and Crisis Response to engage the State Crisis Administration Bureau to assist people impacted by the flooding.

The floodwaters follow days of intense torrential downpours that caused the Nigerian Geophysical Service to issue major flooding advisories. Several areas in Jigawa are prone to inundation following heavy rainfall. In early August, floods from monsoon downpours killed seven individuals and wrecked scores of houses in seven regions of the northeastern Nigerian province.

Over 120 households were relocated in the legislature's Guri area a year ago when their dwellings were swamped by floodwaters during a strong rainstorm.


Nigeria Faces Severe Flood

Suleiman Adamu, Jigawa's hydrological director, informed regional press about two years ago that there weren't any simple fixes to the legislature's inundating crisis, and that no amount of financing would help.

As per SEMA, flooding in the province claimed the lives 40 citizens and ruined over 100,000 hectares of agriculture in 2020.
