On Wednesday, a powerful earthquake with a magnitude of 7.3 struck Japan's northeast shore. The quake led to power outages and has prompted a tsunami warning. Fukushima prefecture, where a devastating earthquake caused serious damages in 2011, was the affected area.
Magnitude 7.3 Earthquake Hits Japan
Some locations measured magnitude 7.3 and shaking strength of six or more on the Japanese scale, making it impossible for people to stand, said NHK, the country's state broadcaster. The United States Geological Survey (USGS) reported the quake as 7.3, but the EMSC reported it as 7.4.
According to The Jerusalem Post, the earthquake struck in Japan at a relatively shallow depth of 33 kilometers beneath the epicenter in Sendai at 11:36 p.m. local time on Wednesday, March 16, 2022.
This information may change in the next hours or minutes when seismologists analyze and adjust their calculations or other agencies issue their findings. A report from the National Polytechnic School at Quito's Institute of Geophysics (IGEPN) described the earthquake as having a magnitude of 7.4.
A number of other seismological organizations, including the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ), Geoscience Australia (GeoAu) and France's Réseau National de Surveillance Sismique (RéNaSS), have also reported the same quake at magnitude 7.4.
When there are multiple agencies reporting on a quake of this magnitude, it's common for the results to differ, with successive reports showing greater accuracy.
Areas Affected by the Earthquake
Preliminary seismic data suggests that everyone in the immediate vicinity of the epicenter was likely to have felt the temblor. With moderate to significant damage, buildings and other infrastructure may have been affected by the dangerous ground shaking that occurred in those places.
There is a chance that moderate shaking happened in Watari (pop. 36,300), 83 kilometers from the epicenter, Iwanuma (pop. 42,400), Kakuda (pop. 33,200), Ishinomaki (pop. 117,200), Schiogama (pop. 59,500), Rifu (pop. 35,000), and Sendai (pop. 1,063,100), all of which are 87 kilometers from the epicenter, as per Volcano Discovery.
If the magnitude or depth of the quake changes, VolcanoDiscovery will immediately update the data and keep you informed if any additional information about the quake becomes available.
Impacts of the Quake
About 2 million households were without power and the condition of reactors at the Fukushima plant was being checked by Tokyo Electric Power Company 9501.T, NHK reported.
Prefectures of Miyagi and Yamagata have been cautioned to expect aftershocks following the earthquakes that struck Japan on March 11.
When the Fukushima Daichi nuclear power facility was severely damaged by an earthquake in 2011, it was located in Fukushima. Due to this, the facility was never revived following the earthquake and has since been shut.
The administration, according to Prime Minister Fumio Kishida, is attempting to determine the full amount of the damage caused by the earthquake.
