Severe weather and tornado forecasts in the US for 2022 have been released by AccuWeather on Wednesday, March 10.

The forecast general claims that life-threatening storms this year can create tornadoes in significantly larger numbers compared to previous years.

The forecast primarily focuses on March, April, and May, which faces the risk of severe weather, including thunderstorms and tornadoes, either occurring separately or simultaneously.

The AccuWeather forecast sheds light on the transition of weather as the US is nearing its spring season.

The forecast was based on several tornado outbreaks since January 2022.

The most recent and notable deadly tornado occurred in Iowa on Saturday, March 5 wherein at least seven people were killed by an E4 tornado; which was initially thought of as an E3 tornado under the Enhanced Fujita (EF) scale.

According to AccuWeather meteorologists, their 2022 US tornado forecast consists of the formation and touchdown of approximately 120 and 170 tornadoes in the US for the remaining days of March.

The forecast emphasized that tornadoes are likely to occur in the Great Plains and Gulf Coast states.

Furthermore, the tornado forecast indicated severe weather will intensify in April, producing approximately between 200 and 275 tornadoes.

Moreover, AccuWeather has projected between 140 and 190 tornadoes will occur across the US in May.

December 2021 Tornadoes

2021 was marked with tornado outbreaks and severe weather incidents across the US throughout the year.

The worst incident was in December when tornadoes killed 90 people and caused widespread damage in the Southern US and Ohio Valley.

The tornadoes are reportedly the deadliest in the US history.

According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), the tornadoes from December 10 and December 11 last year traveled approximately 100 miles and resulted in widespread impact in communities.

The tornadoes also formed thunderstorms and similar weather phenomena.

A week after the deadly tornadoes, the states of Arkansas, Georgia, Illinois, Kentucky, Ohio, Indiana, Missouri, and Tennessee reported 61 tornado outbreaks on December 18.

The NOAA considered the phenomenon remarkable since most tornadoes occur during the spring and summer seasons.

Economic Damage

The US tornadoes in December 2021 not only caused casualties but also significant damage to the country's economy.

According to the Washington Post, the large-scale damage from the tornadoes had caused the US $20 billion dollars in damage cost related to weather disasters.

In 2021, multiple recordings of significant tornado outbreaks occurred in April, May, August, and October. Some states, including Alabama, Arizona, Colorado, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Michigan, Ohio, Oklahoma, and Delaware were affected.

Comparative Forecast

In light of the 2022 tornado forecast of AccuWeather and the related weather disaster incidents from last year cited by the NOAA, there is a possibility that significant and destructive tornadoes will occur particularly in April, May, June, August, October, and December.

Regardless, the occurrence of tornadoes can still transpire at any time throughout 2022.

Due to the unprecedented effects of climate change and global warming. Weather phenomena, including severe weather, storms, and tornadoes in the US have become frequent compared to in the past decades.
