Torrential rain and a winter storm are expected in the southern, southeastern, and eastern parts of the US in the coming days as a developing storm system is expected to form later this week.

The formation of some severe storms, including a winter storm, is also possible.

Moreover, a cold front from southern Canada will affect the Midwest and Northeast through the downpour of heavy snowfall.

The developing storm system and the cold front will collectively affect the whole US, except for the Western US and the Pacific Northwest.

According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) - National Weather Service (NWS), heavy snow, cold temperatures, and strong winds will possibly batter the Great Basin and the Great Plains in the coming days due to the developing storm.

The NOAA - NWS also issued a forecast that severe storms, including a winter storm, along with torrential rain are possible to affect the Deep South and Southeast US until Friday, March 11.

As a result, the US weather agency issued winter weather alerts caused by the winter storm in the affected areas.

The NOAA - NWS issued some of the most significant severe weather risks until Friday:

  • There is a slight chance of the formation of severe thunderstorms over the Central Gulf Coast until the morning of Wednesday, March 9. Low pressure from the Central Gulf Coast will eventually shift to the southern Mid-Atlantic later on Wednesday.
  • Heavy snowfall will cover some areas of the Central Rockies, Great Basin, and Central Plains through Thursday, March 10.
  • Cold temperatures will occur above the Northern Rockies. Additionally, there is a "critical risk" of fire weather in the Southern Rockies or Southern High Plains.

Further Weather Forecast

In the Eastern US, strong winds are expected from Friday evening to Saturday, March 12.

The downpour of heavy rain will occur in the Southeast US.

Heavy snow is possible in the Rockies to the Great Plains and can even reach Oklahoma and New England, as per The Weather Channel.

The Weather Channel issued a forecast that cold air will shift from southern Canada to the Great Plains and Rockies on Thursday, bringing heavy snowfall.

A cold front will also affect the lower Mississippi Valley on Friday and the Northeast US on Saturday.

The developing storm system or so-called "spring storm" will take place after a previous storm system caused a tornado in Iowa, killing at least seven people.

The Weather Channel said the potent system is part of the end cycle of the winter season as the US will enter its spring season.

The US has four seasons: winter, spring, summer, and autumn. Currently, the country is in its winter season, which approximately spans from December to March every year.

The upcoming US spring season will start in March and will last until the end of May, as per Live Science.

Since December 2021, previous winter storms and another severe weather phenomenon in the US have resulted in several casualties, travel disruption, power outages, and infrastructural damage.
