Like in a scene of a science fiction movie, a Hawaiian fisherman caught a giant squid called a "monster from the deep sea."

Nikko Eterovich, a commercial fisherman at Hilo Harbor, caught a diamond squid on Feb. 1. He said it was the biggest squid he had ever caught.

According to the fisherman, the weight of the squid broke the record set by the state of Hawaii.

According to Khon2, Eterovich told that the diamondback squid he caught is approximately 33.5 pounds, beating the world record of the heaviest diamondback squid ever caught in Hawaii, which was weighed 28.5 pounds.

This squid was 4.8 feet long and 2.1 feet across, according to Eterovich's post on Facebook.

Diamondback squids are found in tropical waters around the world.

They typically grow from 3 feet to 4.2 feet, potentially making them the longest cuttlefish ever caught.

During the day, they migrate to a depth of about 164 feet below the surface of the water. However, they come at night to feed, as fishermen usually see, according to Newsweek.

As per Khon2, Andrew Rossiter of the Waikiki Aquarium based in Honolulu stated that, "It's one of the monsters from the deep that we see occasionally in Hawaii. It's a big animal. It's a big animal. I'm not sure as I mentioned what species it is but it's probably normally found in deeper offshore waters. So unusual to see it caught."

Eterovich caught a squid during a normal night's work while he and his crew were in the water for about 6,000 feet.

The fisherman said he and his crew initially thought it might be a manta ray.

Understanding what it was, he grabbed a fishing rod and tried to hook it.

However, the squid did not come easily.

Eterovich said to Newsweek that his sailor failed to hook it and "thrown it into the depths."

How does it consider a monster of the depths of the sea?

According to Khon2, the fisherman sold squid to a local fish market.

There, they said, squids are by far the largest I've seen in a few years. Eterovich was told that he could make "about 100 dishes of squid."

Another lively diamond squid was discovered in the Maldives in 2019 by up-and-coming fisherman Mohamed Jaleel.

Jaleel's Diamondback weighs 42 pounds, making it one of the heaviest to date.

The largest giant squid recorded by scientists was nearly 43 feet long and weighed nearly a ton.

This species can be found all over the world from nearly 3,000 feet below the surface. Most often they are recorded near South Africa and New Zealand, as well as in the North Atlantic and North Pacific.
