Experts have cautioned that Londoners should avoid excessive physical exercise on Friday due to "extremely high" pollution levels.

Terrible Air Quality

The air quality is terrible because of a substantial high-pressure region encompassing western Europe. Because of the lack of air movement, automobile emissions and other pollutants are not swept away as quickly as they usually would.

According to the government's estimate, pollution levels are expected to reach band 10, the highest level on the scale. In March 2018, pollution levels reached this level for the first time.

Reduced Physical Activity

According to the government's official recommendations, older persons and those with lung or heart issues should avoid vigorous physical exercise, while asthmatics may need inhalers more often.

"Reduce the physical effort, especially outdoors, especially if you have symptoms such as a cough or sore throat," even healthy people, according to the American Heart Association.

Stratford in the east, Hammersmith in the west, and Stratford in the east are all projected to have filthy air. However, pollution levels are likely to be high across the city.

Sadiq Khan, London's mayor, claimed earlier this week that automobile usage has returned to pre-pandemic levels and that the consequences for Londoners might be terrible. "We will replace one public health problem with another - caused by unclean air and gridlocked roads - if we do not double down on our efforts to achieve a greener, more sustainable future."

By Saturday, pollution levels are anticipated to return to normal.

London's Pollution Problem

Everyone who lives or works in London is affected by air pollution. Children, the elderly, and those with heart and respiratory problems are the most susceptible categories. Poor air quality also affects those who live in disadvantaged regions, mainly because these places are frequently near busy roadways.

Experts characterized the reductions as extraordinary, who claimed they demonstrated that the air pollution situation was not impossible. In 2015, more than 9,000 individuals in the capital died prematurely due to polluted air.

Several contaminants that can impair human health and the environment are covered under the UK Air Quality Standards Regulations 2010. Based on the EU limit.

Sadiq Khan's Actions

Since Sadiq Khan became mayor of London, air pollution has dropped by 94 percent, with the number of people living in regions with unlawful nitrogen dioxide levels dropping by 94 percent. From 455 in 2016 to 14 in 2019, the number of schools in such places has decreased by 97 percent.

A four-lane traffic tunnel beneath the Thames at Silvertown has been backed by Khan, however, was chastised. They are using the budget for public transportation, cycling, and walking, according to Victoria Rance of the Stop the Silvertown Tunnel Coalition, which yields considerably superior environmental results. According to an Oxford Institute for Energy Studies analysis published in June, the tunnel is incompatible with the Greater London Authority's goal of becoming carbon neutral by 2030.
