Have you been out in the fresh air recently? Know that you are not alone if you are freezing! On Monday, NBC News reported that wind chill advisories were in effect from the northern Plains and Upper Midwest to New England, affecting nearly 15 million people.

As a matter of fact, the northern tier of the United States could see wind chills as low as 45 degrees below zero. Colder-than-average temperatures will be felt in New York and Boston this week.

Northeast Experiences Freezing Weather

Kathryn Prociv, a NBC meteorologist, said that infrared satellites will see the earth since it's so cold! Temperatures below zero can be seen in the colors purple and blue that aren't moving.

This week's frigid temperatures were confined largely to the Northeast. Interestingly, this contrasts sharply with 2021, which will go down in history as one of the warmest years in recent memory.

The average temperature in the contiguous United States for December was 39.3 degrees Fahrenheit, yet this was the warmest December on record, beating out 2015's previous record of 39.3 degrees, according to News Break.

The largest public school district in Massachusetts, the Boston Public School System, announced on Monday that it would close its doors for the day on Tuesday due to the expected bitter cold. According to the New Hampshire Department of Health and Human Services, four state-supervised Covid-19 testing facilities will be closed on Tuesday because of the cold.

Getting Ready For Colder Weather

Getting ready for the impending arrival of the colder months is critical. Temperatures below 32 degrees Fahrenheit can cause blood vessels and arteries to constrict, resulting in an increased risk of illness.

Shoveling or engaging in other rigorous tasks in the cold puts people at danger of hypothermia, frostbite, and other serious ailments.

Pipes that freeze are a severe danger in exceptionally cold temperatures. Pipes break as water freezes and expands inside them. This year's frigid weather and burst pipes can be avoided with a little forethought now.

Severity of the Freezing Weather

Upper Midwest and Great Lakes residents may expect the coldest temperatures of the week on Monday, while the East's temperatures will be the lowest on Tuesday. It's going to be the coldest peak temperatures in New York City (22 degrees) and Boston (12 degrees) since 2019.

Through Tuesday, substantial lake effect snow is possible because of the combination of extremely cold air and mainly ice-free Great Lakes.

Around five million people had been put on notice for lake effect snow on Monday morning. It was 250 miles from the shore of Lake Ontario (south of Watertown, New York) to western Massachusetts when a "mega" lake effect snow belt formed at daybreak.

Buffalo and Syracuse, New York, as well as Cleveland, Ohio, may see snowfall as a result of the lake effect. Up to 2 feet of lake effect snow could fall in the worst-hit areas. Thundersnow and snowfall at a rate of three inches per hour are also possible.
