The US Department of Energy is currently supporting further study into an amazing fuel that offers up to three times the energy level of gasoline. But, more importantly, it may be the only fuel on the planet that emits no greenhouse gases when burned.
The hydrogen economy is poised for a huge takeoff after decades of stagnation and many false dawns.
Entire countries and businesses are making proactive investments in hydrogen technology development.
Some are increasingly referring to hydrogen as a "future fuel."
Meanwhile, some believe that hydrogen will become an internationally traded energy source, like oil and gas.
Hydrogen Transportation
To put it bluntly, storing and transporting hydrogen is a nightmare. Despite its enormous energy content, it has a low volumetric energy density, requiring it to be kept under extreme pressure. Even at 800 atmospheres, it takes up three times the volume of gasoline for the same amount of energy. To hold hydrogen at such high pressures, extremely massive and robust tanks are required. Until ammonia was included, this looked to be an intractable challenge.
As the only companies on the planet developing innovative ways to revolutionize the entire ammonia production process and produce carbon-free ammonia, AmmPower, along with a handful of smaller organizations such as Iceland-based Atmonia and Colorado-based Starfire Energy, may have a clear first-mover advantage.
