Persistent Green New Deal Critic Admitted to Not Having Fully Read the Proposal

Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.) seemed to confess on Wednesday that she hasn't read the climate change resolution that she and Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) want to discuss.

The far-right representative has repeatedly opposed the Green New Deal, a broad climate-change initiative proposed by Ocasio-Cortez and Sen. Ed Markey (D-Mass.) in 2019 and reintroduced this week.

Admitting to Not Yet Finished Reading the Proposal

Greene, who shared a photo of herself on the House floor with Ocasio-Cortez, said she will plan a debate "after I finish reading all 14 pages" of the draft resolution:

She said in the tweet, "I'm glad I ran into you today @AOC to plan our debate about the Green New Deal. After I finish reading all 14 pages, like we agreed, I'll schedule time for our debate."

Greene's repeated tweets about a dialogue have gotten no response from Ocasio-Cortez. Greene wishes her planned debate to be shown on pay-per-view television and for the proceeds to be divided. Critics see Greene's call for a debate as a means for her to collect money, gain national coverage, and fly on the momentum of Ocasio-Cortez. During her brief term in Congress, Greene has become a highly divisive figure.

She has voiced support for QAnon and other conspiracy theories, including one that said the California wildfires were sparked by space lasers funded by Jewish financiers rather than climate change. Greene's committee positions were taken away earlier this year after previous social media activity revealed her support for statements calling for popular Democrats to be killed.

Social Media Response

Many were quick to call out Greene's actions in criticizing and opposing something that she has yet to thoroughly read.

Asking for a Debate

The Republican politician, who was kicked from her committee assignments due to her unpopular views, said that a dialogue between her and Ocasio-Cortez would be "informative for the American People." They have a right to hear both sides, with pros and cons."

Greene recommended that she and AOC both select a moderator for the gathering, in which the two should find "a big news network to host the debate," according to Greene.

"Let's do this for the sake of the people, what do you say?" she wrote in the thread's final post.

The Georgia representative also proposed keeping it as a pay-per-view event, with the proceeds divided between them "for our choice of where it goes."

Greene's representatives said at the time that the Democratic congresswoman had yet to react.

Her spokesman, Nick Dyer, said, "We totally welcome a comment and look forward to a vigorous discussion."
