Essential Tips for Holiday Entertaining

With Thanksgiving officially over, we have now entered the long-awaited holiday season. The holiday season calls for celebration, joy, and hosting a great time- and there's no letting up until that New Year's Ball Drop!

From White Elephant to Cocktail parties- there is a lot going on in this short season. You may be the type to plan a board on Pinterest weeks ahead or stress out and put the task in someone else's hands. Whatever the case may be, I am here to give you some holiday hosting advice.

Here are ten tips to master the holiday season this year and wow your guests without any added stress.

Start Simple

Whatever you decide to make, don't venture too far outside your comfort zone. Decorate and prep things that you can handle so you aren't scrambling last minute.

Provide an appetizer or conversation-starter cocktail

The moment your guests arrive, you'll want them to feel comfortable. You can be a great host by providing an initial drink or appetizer as they arrive. This will make them feel welcome but also gets the party started in a delightful way. Some great appetizer ideas include a charcuterie board, pigs in a blanket, or yogurt-covered pretzels. Something light because you don't want them to get too full if you're providing a bigger meal later on!

Buy wine by the case

If you visit a wine store, they'll usually give you a discount on a wine case!l If you're having a good time with enough people, you won't have to worry about running out. However, another good reason is you can use the same holiday wine flavor at any other event you host or attend this season.

Choose multi-purpose florals

Buy in-season greenery for your table decor. Doing green arrangements with small pops of color is the way to go! To do that, you can start with one main plant and then add in some color like thistle flowers or any other bright floral you're going for. If picking up live decor is too difficult, purchasing a cute holiday table runner and a fake centerpiece can also be a beautiful yet cheap option. In general, use decor that highlights your own personal style!

Add some music to make the mood

If you're like me, it isn't a party without some music to jam to. No matter the style of the party, you want music that doesn't overpower the conversations. We have all been at that restaurant where you can't even hear the other person speak because the music is so loud. A playlist that is both mellow and upbeat is a good call.

If you have a music station like Pandora or Spotify, you can create a playlist based on one of your favorite songs or artists.

Prepare Food Ahead

Make as much food as you can in advance as possible. By preparing food ahead of time, you make it easier on yourself the day of the party. Because who wants to stress on such a fun day! Some dishes that are easy to heat-up the day of are: mashed potatoes, casseroles, and pastas.

Assign Seating

If you have a bigger group attending your gathering, assign seating by which guests have the most in common. Although this is not required, it helps encourage conversation amongst your guests. It is also a fun idea to include personal name tags that match your theme.

Prep the house

It is important to dedicate a few hours to clean your house, as guests will be using your bathroom and other living areas. If you live in shared apartments, inform your roommates or neighbors you're having a party so they can plan ahead of time. The last thing you want is complaints or something to ruin your time!

Provide entertainment

After dinner or drinks, it's a good idea to create a fun activity that will bring the group together. Board games are a great way to do so! You could also host a gift exchange like White Elephant. This is a great time to get creative and cater to your own guests and what they would enjoy!

Have Fun

A good party begins with a good attitude. If your the host, your mentality matters most- don't put too much pressure on yourself to make things perfect. Enjoy your time and keep a smile on your face and your guests will be sure to do the same! After all, laughter is contagious.
