If you've watched the Chris Evans film Snowpiercer, you would know how humans survive the world of ice. The movie shows an Ice Age-era of Earth wherein people are forced to stay in a train to survive from the heat outside.
Unfortunately, it didn't end well for many humans in the film. Here's a wild question: is it possible that the Earth could actually be frozen forever?
What happens once Earth turns into an ice age
Ice builds up along Lake Michigan at North Avenue Beach as temperatures dipped well below zero on January 6, 2014 in Chicago, Illinois. Chicago hit a record low of -16 degree Fahrenheit this morning as a polar air mass brought the coldest temperatures in about two decades into the city.
In the countries where winter is a normal season, snow is no longer a brand new thing. But, what happens once all water on Earth gets frozen?
Experts from different fields have studied this question. Harvard geologist Paul Hoffman and geochemist Daniel Schrag studied this idea, which explains what happens once Earth turns into an ice age.
The total water volume on Earth is estimated at 1.386 billion km³ (333 million cubic miles), with 97.5% being saltwater and 2.5% being freshwater.
This means water is an important aspect for the world to survive. Once they freeze, the first thing that will happen is the appearance of humungous ice blocks.
The average depth of oceans is over 3,000 meters. About nine percent of water will be expanded once frozen. This means the ice will expand, reaching over 300 meters.
Imagine experiencing this expansion simultaneously around the world. This will result in destroyed buildings, roads instantly cracking, and water pipes exploding wherever you are.
Humans will also experience non-stop local earthquakes across the globe.
Overheating world
Surprisingly, the world will be scorchingly hot once it gets frozen. Even countries that do not have water will experience the blazing heat coming from the ice age era.
When all the ice melts after this sudden phenomenon, the world will soon experience deadly flash floods.
What happens to humans?
Commuters brave sub-zero temperatures as they make their way to work in the Loop on January 2, 2018 in Chicago, Illinois. Record cold temperatures are gripping much of the U.S. and are being blamed on several deaths over the past week.
Of course, since the world will be scorchingly hot, along with multiple earthquakes. Humans have no chance to live during the ice age era.
As explained, the human body is composed of more than 60% of water. The brain, heart, lungs, and every body part that needs water to function will no longer be working, according to its purpose.
Technically, the human body will explode and not survive at all. Not just human beings, but even every animal, plant, or any living thing will no longer survive the ice age.
The last place that the ice would not freeze is the deepest part of the ocean.
Is it possible to happen?
Luckily, experts conclude that the ice age would not be possible a billion years from now. However, the never-ending global warming could still result in something worse.
