A magnitude 7.5 earthquake was recorded in Kuril Islands, located at far eastern Russia, Wednesday, 2:49 a.m. UTC (Tuesday, 9:49 p.m. EDT), according to U.S. Geological Survey. It's origin was at a depth of 37 miles, around 136 miles south-southeast of Severo. There were no immediate reports of damages.
The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center released a tsunami warning for Hawaii. It was halted shortly after, following further hazard analysis, Blomberg reported.
The U.S. National Tsunami Warning Center also clarified the earthquake poses no tsunami danger to U.S. West Coast, British Columbia, or Alaska. However, it noted that some of these areas may experience non-damaging sea-level changes.
Earthquake expert Lucy Jones tweeted, the Russia earthquake is "not the type that usually produces a tsunami." Jones explained it is "deeper and smaller than the quakes" that caused big trans-Pacific tsunamis in the past.
