Training puppies are always thought to stay on the right side of the law and offer comfort to the community, but it seems like some opportunities are too tempting to pass up - even for a trained good boy.

A police therapy dog's early Christmas holiday was thwarted when a police officer caught this doggo stole toy donations for himself.

The Franklin Police Department in Massachusetts collected toys to give to the Santa Foundation for the Christmas season. Still, the room full of goodies proved to be far too overwhelming for their golden retriever, Ben Franklin.

The canine, who was welcomed by the police department in February 2019, was caught red-pawed as he tried to steal away with a brand-new baby doll still in its packaging in his mouth. But it turns out that wasn't the only stuff he took this holiday season.

The police department took to Facebook to share a video of the heartwarming moment Officer Eric Cusson discovered Ben's betrayal. The pooch was seen with a doll resting in the carrier in his mouth while trying to escape successfully.

Ben tried to escape from officers when they caught him carrying a baby doll in its carrier by the handle. Officer Cusson asked Ben where he is headed. The dog slowly retreats away before hurrying down the steps and around the corner.

The smart dog looks behind him to see if he is still being followed. Ben ended up just leading them back to the stash of goodies by his bed under a desk.

The people in the police department could not help but chuckle as Officer Cusson explicates off-cam that the dog is going away because Ben is afraid the officers are going to take the baby off.

Deputy Chief James Mill told Boston25 News that Ben thought the toys all belonged to the pooch when he saw the presents. Police failed to retrieve the toys from Ben, due to an excess of slobber. Boston25 News reported that police officers have instead replaced the stolen toys.

The thieving pup was involved in a robbery case. But Ben would likely not face charges as he needs to run of the station, according to the news report, but he has been banned from the toy room. Luckily, the pooch has friends on the inside.

Mill noted that Ben is one of those amazing buddies who always show up at a party that everyone admires. He added that Ben is like a ray of sunshine, even if someone is having a terrible day.

The response on Facebook has been overwhelmingly positive. Despite the behavior, people believe Ben should be on Santa's "nice" list. The adorable video has earned more than 50,000 views, with Facebook users taking to the comments to say the video positively made their day.

One follower wrote that the police department had the "cutest criminal around." "That [scene] was so adorable!!!! The guilty party [escapred] from the police, but was eventually surrounded and apprehended!' another added.

There were also loads of people who cheered Ben on. "Good for you Ben! You've earned a few [more] toys this year," one wrote."
