In every celebration, it is inevitable to have leftovers, especially are that type of person who makes foods too generously. Thanksgiving is no exception.

The most frequently asked question after Thanksgiving is probably whether the leftovers are still okay to eat. Unfortunately, there are many foods that do not last long because of many factors such as an improper storing procedure or simply because of a certain ingredient that spoils quickly.

The US Department fo Agriculture said that all food should be wrapped up or put in airtight containers before putting it in the refrigerator within two hours to keep it fresh. But this is a general statement, and every food is different and therefore, requires a different stored procedure.

Check the guide below to find out what to do with common Thanksgiving leftovers.

1. Roasted Turkey

Turkey (or sometimes, chicken) has been a substantial part of Thanksgiving feast. According to Foodsafety.gov, it usually lasts for three to four days inside the fridge, but with proper procedure, you can extend its shelflife up to six months.

The first step is removing the stuffing inside because it usually freezes longer than the bird meat and will allow the bacteria to grow. You can keep it on a separate container if you want to keep it.

Once done, cover the bird with foil or put it in an airtight container as soon as possible for freezing. It is a common idea that if a food is stored on its freshest state, the longer it would last, and it is just the same with roasted turkey.

2. Cooked ham

Traditional hams are cured to last long, but store-bought cooked ham isn't and could only last up to four days. Like on turkey, you can wrap it on a foil or on an airtight plastic bag before freezing so to extend its life up to two months. If you noticed that the ham has a slimy texture, throw it away immediately as it is a tell-tale sign that it is spoiled.

3. Potatoes

If you put cream and butter (which is what you probably would have done), you should store it in a fridge quickly within two hours as it spoils quickly. But every other potato dishes like salad or scalloped should be stored right away in an airtight container so it can last up to three days.

For uncooked potatoes, blanched them first before freezing because they will become too watery on the next time you use them.

4. Stuffing, dressing, and gravy

Just like what is mentioned earlier, stuffing must be separated quickly from the leftover bird and put it on a separate airtight container. It can last in the freezer for up to two months. The same procedure can be done with dressing and gravy, assuming there is any left.

5. Cranberry sauce

Cranberry sauce, whether store-bought or homemade, can be used as a sandwich spread for the next two weeks. If you want to extend it further, you can freeze it up to two months. Look out for any changes on odor, flavor or appearance as it is a sign of spoilage.

6. Pasta, casserole, and roasted veggies

Any of these dishes that have mayonnaise must be stored within two hours before serving. When stored properly, most from this category can last up to five days. However, do not freeze macaroni dishes as the taste will not be the same.

7. Bread and croissants

Among the foods in this list, this is the only one you should not put in the refrigerator at all cause because the cold air dries it out. Instead, just wrap it in plastic and leave it in the pantry. It should last you for up to a week.
