Tornado Kills Two, Destroys Hundreds of Homes in Brazil [VIDEO]

Two people are dead and 64 are injured after a tornado wreaked havoc Sunday in Taquarituba City, about 200 miles east of Sao Paulo.

Hundreds of houses, as well as telephone and power lines were destroyed by the tornado, cutting services to the region, according to the Spanish-language EFE news agency, which cited government sources. As of Monday morning electricity and telephone services has not been restored.

Jamil Francisco da Silva, a bus driver, was among the dead. Da Silva reportedly drove a bus that ferried farm workers from the city to the countryside. His bus was swept away by the tornado, killing him and injuring many of the passengers.

The tornado's fierce winds tore off the roof of a gymnasium, killing a young man inside playing soccer.

Tornadoes in Brazil are not uncommon. The Sao Paulo region sees the most in the nation every year, with the second half of the year more active than the first.
