Billionaire and businessman Elon Musk recently unveiled his Tesla Solar Roof that promises to replace conventional roofing system with new tiles that can harvest solar energy from the sun. But what's more surprising is that, despite the upgrade, Musk says the solar roofs will cost even lesser than the usual roofing materials.
In order to produce solar roofs, Tesla first needed to acquire SolarCity, which the company successfully did. This means that Musk's company will be able to produce innovative solar tiles.
Tesla unveiled the new solar roof in Los Angeles along with two other products, the Powerwall 2 and Powerpack 2. These products are designed to work together to render sustainable and renewable energy to homes. "People love their homes and we want them to be better," Tesla CEO Elon Musk said during the solar roof launch.
But that's not the most interesting part. The solar roof will cost even lesser than the usual roofing materials. It is said that it will cost lesser to produce and install the new solar roofs and Musk was even quoted saying that electricity "is just a bonus" after a sleek design and the durability promised by the new solar roof, as reported by Bloomberg.
This can be the reason why the top players in the energy industry are anticipating the release date of Tesla solar roof because, it if is indeed cheaper than the typical roofing materials, it will revolutionize the solar power industry in the world.
Based on the launching claims, the solar roofs can compete with even the most expensive roofing materials aesthetically. And Tesla also claims that it can even be better compared to others when it comes to durability.
"So the basic proposition will be: Would you like a roof that looks better than a normal roof, lasts twice as long, costs less and, by the way, generates electricity?" Musk said according to the same report by Bloomberg. "Why would you get anything else?" Musk added.
One factor that will make the roofs cheaper is the affordability in terms of shipping the roofs. The new Tesla roof will weigh about five times lighter than normal roofs, they will also be less fragile making them easier and cheaper to ship as well.
