According to a report from The Verge, the Uncaged Parley is a collaboration between Adidas and Parley for the Oceans, an environmental group that's geared towards getting more attention to how much pollution is in the world's oceans. With this highly-anticipated shoe, the two organizations are able to make a fashion and environmental statement.
The material of the sneakers' upper is made from five percent recycled polyester and 95 percent plastic waste from the ocean, specifically collected in areas around the Maldives. Each pair is made up of approximately 11 plastic bottles. The majority of the sneaker such as the heel, lining and laces are also created using recycled materials.
It's a fresh take on the famous Adidas UltraBOOSTs, one that's friendly on the planet as well as on the wearer.
While the original Uncaged Parley used 3D-printing for the shoe, the report from The Verge revealed that the method has been dropped for mass production. It's still the recycled waste being transformed into yarn for the upper, but Adidas haven't divulged how yet.
Only 7,000 pairs are being released for the first wave of the shoe, but Adidas officials promise there are plans to make a lot more of this eco-friendly pair of UltraBOOST.
"We will make one million pairs of shoes using Parley Ocean Plastic in 2017 - and our ultimate ambition is to eliminate virgin plastic from our supply chain," Adidas exec Eric Liedtke said in a press statement. Soccer kits from ocean waste are also in the works for Bayern Munich and Real Madrid.
"At this point, it's no longer just about raising awareness," Parley for the Oceans founder Cyrill Gutsch said in a statement in Sport Techie. "It's about taking action and implementing strategies that can end the cycle of plastic pollution for good. Eco-innovation is an open playing field. With the release of the Ocean Plastic jerseys and UltraBOOST Uncaged adidas x Parley shoes, we're inviting every consumer, player, team and fan to own their impact under Parley A.I.R. and define their role within the movement."
The UltraBOOST Uncaged Parley will retail for $200.
