Some varieties of Nature Made vitamins are being recalled due to possible salmonella or Staphylococcus aureus contamination, the manufacturer announced on Tuesday.
Pharmavite, LLC, the dietary supplements company based in Northbrige, California, recalled several types of Nature Made vitamins and supplements containing vitamin C, B vitamins and folic acid.
The following Nature Made products are being recalled:
- Nature Made Adult Gummies Multi, lot numbers 1196066, 1196071, 1205052
- Nature Made Adult Gummies Multi + Omega-3, lot numbers 1173600
- Nature Made Adult Gummies Multi for Her plus Omega-3s, lot numbers 1196048, 1196050
- Nature Made Super B Complex w/C & Folic Acid tablets, lot numbers 1173779, 1170987, 1204735, 1173146, 1204001
According to Pharmavite, consumers should check the lot numbers on the back panel of the container beside the expiration date. Nature Made products that fall within the lots mentioned should not be consumed and should be returned to the retailers for a full refund.
"The recall was initiated after it was discovered that salmonella and/or Staphylococcus aureus testing were not completed properly on these specific batch lots," representatives from Pharmavite said in a press release.
"Pharmavite has identified the cause of the error, is taking the matter very seriously and has implemented corrective actions to rectify the case," the company added.
In the U.S., salmonella-caused illnesses are estimated at one million every year. Salmonella may cause serious - and in some cases, fatal - infection among children, elderly or those who have low immune systems. In some cases, the bacteria may also cause infected aneurysms, endocarditis and arthritis.
Symptoms include diarrhea, fever, nausea, vomiting and abdominal cramps, and these may begin 12 to 72 hours after exposure to the bacteria. Illness can last for four to seven days, and most infected people recover on their own.
Staph aureus toxin in food may lead to food poisoning. Common symptoms include nausea, vomiting, retching, abdominal cramping and prostration.
Symptoms of Staph food poisoning can happen fast, and many cases acute, depending on the patient's susceptibility to the toxin, the amount of toxin in the food consumed and the patient's general health.
