The latest study discovered that artificial intelligence (AI), with the use of a new machine-learning forecast, can help improve the South Asian Moonsoon prediction of rainfall 10 to 30 days in advance.
Heavy rainfall can have a devastating impact on low-lying or flood-prone areas, with a risk of the following:
- flooding
- landslides
- mudslides
- flash floods
It can cause damage to infrastructure and life, particularly in poor areas.
In a recent Nature World News (NWN) report, experts warned of climate change due to extreme weather events, including storms. Communities can likely experience frequent flooding and rainfall, which is challenging for low-lying areas.
Effective and improved rainfall prediction is essential to predicting the changing global climate amidst the threats of climate change. Better predictions mean that areas can prepare for disastrous storms.
As a result, researchers tried to improve the rainfall prediction for the South Asian monsoon. The study looked into the role of machine learning and artificial intelligence. The study's insights can help the city anticipate flooding threats.
A New Machine-Learning Rainfall Forecast for the South Asian Moonsoon
In a 2022 report, the South Asia moonsoon became more extreme and challenging, bringing unprecedented impacts on vulnerable areas in the Indian subcontinent. The research findings were published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.
The study emphasizes the need for predicting the spatial and temporal patterns of the said moonsoon, which can cause flooding risks and affect the importance of water sources for agriculture.
To improve the forecast, the researchers utilized the monsoon intraseasonal oscillation (MISO) high resolution atmospheric model, improving the forecasting of the South Asian moonsoon in India.
Understanding the rainfall can anticipate the dry and rain patterns, which are crucial for drought-stricken areas. It can increase the yield or harvest of farmers, significantly mitigating the risk of flooding.
According to the study, the new machine learning can predict the rainfall from the moonsoon 10 to 30 days in advance.
"There is a lot of concern about how climate change will affect the monsoon and other weather events like hurricanes, heat waves, and so on. Improving predictions on shorter timescales is an important part of responding to climate change because we need to be able to improve preparedness for these events, Eviatar Bach,a Foster and Coco Stanback Postdoctoral Scholar Research Associate in Environmental Science and Engineering, said, as quoted in the report.

Importance of Climate and Moonsoon Predictions
The report shows that it is not easy to predict the said moonsoon. As a result, the researchers noted that machine learning and AI can be helpful for weather prediction, and providing accurate results.
It can allow communities to evacuate when the moon brings challenges to extreme weather, mitigating potential deaths and economic damage.
