A recent study revealed that solar panels and batteries in households could have a big advantage in saving money on electric vehicles (EV).
United Nations Environment Programme emphasized that the transport system is seen to be completely dependent on fossil fuels, noting that it has caused carbon dioxide emissions considered harmful to the atmosphere.
The UN Environment Programme added that in the last 20 years, electric vehicles have helped to reduce the environmental footprint as electric vehicles managed to achieve technological advancements for efficient transportation.
Countries are also urged to shift or use electric vehicles to reduce environmental impact and efficiently improve the transport system.
On the contrary, the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) noted that over 50 Electric vehicles (EVs) and Plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) models are available in the market.
- EV is equipped with a battery and electric motor. The Environmental Agency said electric vehicles have fewer emissions, unlike gasoline-fueled cars.
- PHEVs are said to combine electric and gasoline as fuel sources.
Electric vehicles and solar panels
According to the study, electric vehicles have become popular worldwide, with many countries and states following the trend of using electric vehicles.
The research was published in the Renewable Energy journal and is available to read in ScienceDaily. University of South Australia (UniSA) researchers conducted the study.
Professor Mahfuz Aziz explained that electric vehicles would become an important part of household energy consumption.
Based on the study, the researchers found out and calculated that electric car owners are capable of reducing by 40% their electricity consumption cost, which the owners are said not to be reliant on power grids.

It addressed concerns about the electric vehicle charging cost, which is considered a hindrance in owning an electric car.
Professor Aziz explained electric vehicles charging at home would be the most convenient for owners of cards and motorists.
Good for the environment
Moreover, the researchers analyzed the South Australia data. The area was said to have 40 percent of households equipped with solar panels. Then, the researchers gathered and compare scenarios. It considered the following:
- Cost of solar panel installation
- Charging demand for electric vehicles
- Degradation of batteries
- Export power limits
According to the research, they analyzed EV consumption in peak periods (From 5:00 p.m to 9:00 p.m) and annual energy consumption costs for households with petrol-based cars compared to those with EVs.
The researchers explained that the results showed:
- Solar panels could be helpful to reduce by 6.1 percent the annual energy costs of houses with petrol-fueled cards.
- It reveals that it reduces by 10.38 percent using a battery system.
- A record of 24 percent and 32 percent annual energy cost reduction can occur when owners replace petrol-fueled cars with electric vehicles.
- Additionally, the researchers considered the most significant reduction by 39.6 percent with off-peaking charging.
The study noted that the low prices of rooftop photovoltaic (PV) and battery costs could help encourage houses to become environmental-friendly by having solar power.
Solar panels and electric vehicles are considered efficient and best for communities sa it doesn't pose a threat to the environment.
