A Canadian motorcyclist suffered broken bones and a concussion after a black bear darted in front of him as the bike sped down a British Colombia highway at nearly 90 mph. More surprising than the motorcyclist's survival is that he caught the whole episode on video.
In the quick clip posted below, the motorcyclist, who has not been named, seems preoccupied with filming his speed with a helmet cam and does not see the bear running across the road.
The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RMCP) posted the video of the June 30 crash online in an effort to warn of the dangers of driving while distracted, according to The Canadian Press.
"He's going from zero to 140 in less than 20 seconds," said RCMP Cpl. Robert McDonald in describing the images to the news outlet.
"You can see that he is focusing on the speedometer when the bear is already into the roadway so he's distracted by filming. When he finally looks up to see the bear at 140 kilometers, there's not a lot of time to (react)."
When the motorcyclist apparently struck the bear at 140 kilometers per hour (86.9 mph) along British Colombia's Highway 7, the rider crashes and rolls several times, but he was not seriously hurt.
It is unclear whether the bear was hurt or what became of it. Police were unable to locate it after the crash. Cpl. McDonald said he was uncertain if the bear was actually struck by the motorcycle.
"There are no signs of impact on the front end of the motorcycle. The mirror was broken from falling over and (there are) scratches on the motorcycle from skidding down the road, but we couldn't see any signs of impact."
