A woman who had five organs transplanted has successfully delivered a baby girl in what is being reported as the first known case of a five-organ transplant patient giving birth.
Fatema Al Ansari, 26, was given a new liver, pancreas, stomach and small and large intestines at Jackson Memorial Hospital in Miami six years ago, the Associated Press reported.
Al Ansari reportedly gave birth to a baby girl by cesarean section late last month at the same hospital where she had the organ transplant.
She described the new feeling of motherhood through an interpreter, saying in Arabic, "It's the best feeling in the world."
The woman's obstetrician, Shalih Y. Yasin, said in the report that it was "is a miracle by itself" that someone with five transplanted organs would even have the desire to have a child.
Previously, the most transplanted organs a woman has had before giving birth was known to be two.
"We have searched all medical literature all over the world for any pregnancy that had five multi-transplants and this is the first case to our knowledge," said the doctor, according to the AP.
Al Ansari is from Qatar and plans to return there in the coming weeks, the report stated.
The report stated that people who have multi-organ transplants like Al Ansari have good survival rates but that "almost none" of the patients then go on to bear children.
Khalifa Alhayal, the patient's husband, said, also through an Arabic interpreter, that the pregnancy was a hard decision to make, "But we wanted to give hope to other people who have transplants and give them a chance, too."
Her doctors said that Al Ansari is healthy enough to try for a second baby and that her case gives hope to other multi-organ transplant patients who desire to have children.
