First Aid Is Essential To Save Lives

First aid refers to the immediate assistance provided to a person who has been injured or is suddenly taken ill. The purpose of first aid is to preserve life, prevent the condition from worsening, and promote recovery until professional medical help arrives.

Why Is It Important To Know First Aid?

It Can Save Lives

In emergencies, administering first aid promptly can significantly affect the victim's outcome. The first few minutes following an injury or illness are critical, and administering appropriate first aid can help stabilise the victim until medical professionals arrive.

Prevent The Condition From Worsening

When left untreated, some injuries or illnesses can worsen over time, leading to more serious health complications. Administering first aid promptly can prevent the condition from deteriorating and help the victim recover faster.

Reduce Pain And Suffering

First aid can help reduce pain and suffering caused by injuries or sudden illness. For example, administering pain relief medication or applying ice packs can help ease pain and discomfort caused by injuries.

Mental Health Training

According to Mental Health Australia, 1 in 5 Australians suffer from a mental disorder in Australia. Mental health training is essential in promoting a healthy work environment and home life. The Australian Bureau of Statistics reports that nearly half of Australians will experience mental disorders during their lifetime. Recognising symptoms of mental health issues in our friends, family, and colleagues is crucial as learning how to administer effective first aid in a crisis.

Mental health training aims to educate, recognise and address common mental health challenges such as stress, anxiety, and depression. It equips participants with the skills and knowledge to identify the signs and symptoms of mental health problems, provide support and referrals to those in need, and reduce the stigma surrounding mental health issues.

Mental health training can also help individuals learn self-care techniques and coping strategies that promote their organisation. Organisations can foster a culture of care and compassion by prioritising mental health training and inclusivity where all members feel valued and supported.

Basic First Aid Skills

Knowing how to identify and provide appropriate first aid is crucial. This article will cover the basics of identifying emergencies, checking for breathing and pulse, administering CPR, treating cuts, bruises, burns, and fractures, and handling allergic reactions.

Identifying Emergencies

The first step in providing first aid is identifying the emergency. Emergencies can range from minor injuries to life-threatening conditions. Some common emergencies include cardiac arrest, choking, severe allergic reactions, seizures, and severe bleeding. It's important to assess the situation carefully to determine the appropriate response. If you're unsure, it's always better to err on the side of caution and call for professional medical help.

Checking For Breathing And Pulse

If the casualty is unresponsive, the next step is to check for breathing and pulse. This involves tilting the head back and looking for chest movements, listening for breathing sounds, and feeling for a pulse on the neck or wrist. If there is no breathing or pulse, the victim requires immediate CPR.

Administering CPR

Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) is a life-saving technique that involves chest compressions and rescue breathing. CPR aims to restore breathing and circulation until medical professionals arrive. If you need to be trained in CPR, you must immediately call for professional medical help.

Treating Cuts, Bruises, Burns, And Fractures

Minor injuries can be treated with basic first aid techniques. For cuts and bruises, clean the wound with soap and water, apply pressure to stop bleeding, and cover the bandage. Cool the affected area with running water for 10 minutes for burns and cover it with a sterile bandage. For fractures, immobilise the affected area with a splint or sling.

Allergic Reactions

Severe allergic reactions can be life-threatening and require immediate attention. Symptoms of an allergic reaction may include difficulty breathing, swelling of the face, lips or tongue, and hives. If you suspect an allergic reaction, call for medical help immediately. If the victim has an EpiPen, administer it according to instructions.

Emergency First Aid And How To Respond

First Aid For Heart Attacks And Strokes

If someone is experiencing chest pain, discomfort, or pressure lasting more than a few minutes, it could be a sign of a heart attack. If someone is experiencing sudden numbness or weakness on one side of their body, difficulty speaking, or a severe headache, it could be a sign of a stroke. In both cases, call for emergency medical assistance immediately. While waiting for medical help, have the person rest comfortably and loosen any tight clothing.

First Aid For Choking

If someone is choking, they may be unable to talk or breathe. Ask the person if they are choking; if they cannot respond, assume they are. Stand behind the person and deliver 5 sharp back blows until the object is dislodged. If the person becomes unconscious, perform CPR.

First Aid For Drowning

If someone has drowned, call for emergency medical assistance. Check for breathing and start CPR. If the person has water in their lungs or stomach, they may vomit or cough. Turn them on their side to prevent choking.

First Aid For Seizures

If someone has a seizure, move any nearby objects that could cause injury. Do not restrain the person or put anything in their mouth. Time the seizure and call for medical assistance if it lasts longer than 5 minutes or if the person does not regain consciousness. After the seizure, the person may be confused or disoriented.

In these situations, it is important to remain calm and provide as much assistance as possible until professional medical help arrives. Always prioritise your safety and call for emergency medical assistance immediately if unsure what to do.

When you sign up to train with a registered training organisation such as First Aid Pro, you will receive the essential training that will equip you with the skills and knowledge to handle situations effectively until emergency services arrive.

First aid skills are essential for everyone to have, regardless of age, gender, or profession. Knowing how to provide first aid can help save a life or prevent further injury. Your first aid skills could be the difference between life and death.

In addition to emergencies, first aid skills can also be useful in non-emergency situations and in situations where professional medical help is not readily available, such as during natural disasters or when travelling to remote locations. Learning and practicing first aid skills is easy and can be done through various resources. These skills can help save a life or prevent further injury, making you an asset to your community and those around you.
