A huge-scale animal rescue taking in 77 overlooked animals was done by two local animal welfare organizations. Panhandle Animal Welfare Society and the Alaqua Animal Refuge volunteers explained that animals were settling in unhealthy conditions. A staff over the past two days said they have noticed incredible progress, mainly from the 11 horses they are now lodging.
Mindy Moriarty an Alaqua's medical manager says, "The behavior has reversed on all of them, coming up to you with brighter eyes." On February 12 the manager took part in the rescue.
"The quality of hay that was refrained there for a few of them to chew was, I would call it too low quality, but that was even being slightly generous, it was awful," she said.
Chicken and Ducks
Once Alaqua learned about the conditions that chicken and ducks were scouring for food in overcrowded pens and animals were living in three feet of mud. They had to rearrange their current animals to make room for the new arrivals.
Moriarty explained -"we just jostled a few things around here and made it work, so we could keep ones we didn't know how sick they were going to be or what the condition was so we had the opportunity to keep some separate if need be."
The deprived ones in alaqua will continue to stay so that they can observe their health. Presently it's a matter of locating fosters for the bigger animal and removing those that wasn't cared for.
Moriarty explains that help is always welcomed and one of the biggest expenses at the refuge is caring for horses.
