A newborn boy in China was rushed to the hospital for an emergency procedure in which he "gave birth" to his own twin after doctors discovered a parasitic fetus inside the boy's stomach.
The parents of newborn Xiao Feng took him to the hospital after noticing his bloated stomach and that he was having trouble breathing, according to the Inquisitor, which translated the Chinese news report in the video below.
Doctors at a Huaxi hospital used MRI and X-ray scans to get a picture of what was wrong with the boy, whose belly was so swollen he looked like a tiny pregnant person.
Xiao Feng reportedly had an identical, conjoined twin that he absorbed into his body while they were both still in the womb. Conjoined twins are formed when a fertilized egg fails to separate completely.
The unborn fetus was about 10 inches across and had fully formed limbs and a spine, according to the Inquisitor. Docotrs said baby Feng would have died has his twin not been removed.
The case of a conjoined twin being absorbed by its stronger sibling prior to birth is extremely rare, but not unprecedented.
Last year a 3-year-old boy was found carrying his parasitic twin inside him in Peru.
In 2008, a 9-year-old girl in Greece was diagnosed with a tumor that turned out to be concealing the undeveloped embryo of her parasitic twin, according to the Huffington Post.
