It isn't a surprise to know that exercising is good for us. But it is becoming more and more evident that the long term benefits are greater than we imagined.

Thanks in part due to a recent study done by Ball State University. The researchers recruited "exercisers" and "non-exercises" in their 70s, as well as cyclists and runners around the age of 25.

Before and after a weight training workout they assessed the participants. Taking measurements for the size of the muscle mass in their thighs, a biopsy of the muscle, and blood samples to measure inflammation.

What they discovered was that the inflammatory markers in the blood and muscle tissue of the "exercisers" in their 70s was similar to that of the 25 year old runners and cyclists. Providing a major insight into a potential role that life long exercise plays fighting the aging process.

Experts like Dr. Smith even went on to make a point to say that those in the 80+ age range can get the same benefits from weightlifting, like building muscle, increasing strength, and improve functional performance.

The benefits of lifting weights for the aging population goes far beyond all of that as well, as this review by Nick Rizzo at RunRepeat produced. After analyzing more than one hundred scientific journal articles, they found 78 benefits in 13 different aspects of health for seniors.

They found that weight training helped improve areas of health and life for seniors like:

●      Preventing and reversing age-related muscle loss

●      Fighting obesity and increasing metabolism

●      Maintaining and improving your functional independence

●      Keeping functional independence and reducing your fall risks

●      Quality of life measurements

●      Osteoarthritis and bone health

●      Heart health

●      Overall cognitive functioning

●      Helping support and improve mental and emotional health

●      Reducing overall mortality risk

It's never too late to start and the longer you do it the better. Experts suggest getting started by talking with your doctor. Then potentially considering investing in a certified personal trainer to help you get started in the most effective and safest way possible. Don't rush progress and risk injury. Always best to make slow and steady improvements to avoid getting hurt.

There is also a lot more options other than just weightlifting. Silver Sneakers shares 9 great options in this article. Everything from swimming to yoga and more is on the list. With science supporting great benefits in the fight against aging from all of them.

Which highlights the biggest point of all. Find ways to be more active every day and be completely sedentary less.
