Nestlé USA, Inc. has issued a voluntary recall of its Nestlé Drumstick Club 16 count Variety Pack and 24 count Vanilla Pack due to potential listeria contamination.
The recall was made after one of the equipment contact surfaces in the production line of the company's Bakersfield, California ice cream production facility tested positive for Listeria monocytogenes. So far, there have been no reported cases of people getting sick after eating the recalled products.
Despite being negative for listeria, Nestlé is recalling its Drumstick Club 16 Count Variety Pack with UPC code 72554-11096 and 24 count Vanilla Pack with UCP code 72554-00160 as a precautionary measure to prevent any potential consumer illnesses.
"There have been no positive test results for Listeria monocytogenes present in the Drumstick cone products themselves. However, the company has received positive test results for Listeria monocytogenes on equipment contact surfaces located on the production line where these items were made," Nestlé wrote on their recall announcement. "Therefore, the company is taking precautionary action to recall the items to avoid any potential for consumer illness."

The recalled products were manufactured at Nestlé's Bakersfield, California facility between Aug. 31 and Sept. 17, 2016. The affected products include 14 different production codes of Drumstick Club 16 Count Variety Pack with best before date between June 2 and June 15, 2017. On the other hand, four different production code of 24 count Vanilla Pack with best before date between June 16 and June 19, 2017 have also been recalled. The complete details of the recalled ice cream products are available at FDA's recall announcement.
Nestlé also assures consumers that their recalled products will not repeat the Blue Bell listeria outbreak that struck the U.S. for five years. As oppose to the Blue Bell outbreak, the listeria contamination of Nestlé only occurred in the equipment and the product itself is free from listeria.
The company is advising consumers not to consume their products included in the recall list. People who have bought the products can return it to their place of purchase or contact Nestlé Consumer Services for replacement.
