Natura Pet Products has expanded a voluntary recall of its dry pet foods due to potential salmonella contamination.
Salmonella contamination can affect the pets that eat the food or humans who handle the contaminated food.
Though no cases of salmonella have been reported in association with the contaminated pet food, the Nebraska-based company has expanded upon its March 18 recall after additional products made on one manufacturing line tested positive for salmonella.
Salmonella was confirmed in certain batches of dry cat food and cat treats, but Natura is recalling other products made around the same time frame. The recall effects dry dog, cat and ferret food produced between Jan. 1 and March, but does not apply to wet and canned products, according to a statement by Natura.
The company is offering refunds or replacements to customers who bought any product subject to recall, which include pet food items sold under the brands Innova, EVO, California Natural, HealthWise and Karma.
The affected products are sold through veterinary clinics, certain pet retailers nationwide, online, as well as in Canada, Hong Kong, Korea, Japan, Malaysia and Costa Rica.
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration suggests that healthy people exposed to salmonella should monitor themselves for nausea, vomiting, diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, abdominal cramping and fever and consult a doctor of they experience any of the salmonella related sympotms.
According to the FDA pets with salmonella may be "lethargic and have diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, fever, and vomiting. Some pets will have only decreased appetite, fever and abdominal pain. Infected but otherwise healthy pets can be carriers and infect other animals or humans."
